Every hospital and nursing home has an expected infection rate. We like those that are reported as Expected or Actual Infections per 1,000 Patient or Resident Days. The word Expected allows a data normalization factor for providers serving the very seriously immune-compromised.
By taking the large base of state averages, differences in susceptibility are automatically accommodated. Our goal is to compare states and ask hospital and long-term care administrators to self-asess against the state average. We believe this can be a gateway to take actions to move down in infections and up in patient safety.
We are looking for estimates based on available records. These will never be totally accurate but perhaps are in a range to be actionable. This data may not be collected every year thus we can accept numbers after 2008 and we will note the year.
Let’s start with acute care hospitals. What is your state’s rate of hospital acquired infections per 1000 Patient Days? Please let us know and we will start filling in a chart, crediting you for submitting your estimate for your State.
There is a grant available for anyone who can gather the numbers for all 50 states and Washington DC. Contact us for details:
