The Handwashing For Life® Olympics staged in Washington DC
Held in conjunction with the 10th annual Food Safety & Security Summit, this year’s venue was visited by two former title holders, both multiple winners. From the left are Michele Samarya-Timm from the Franklin New Jersey Health Department and Kristen Machicek from Pappas Restaurants, better known to some as Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen and Pappasito’s Cantina. They are joined by HandwashingForLife’s Chef/Trainer Dion Lerman.
The three winners’ names are posted here at the scene of the event. Only four points separated the first and third place finishers.
Janet Raddatz (right) from Sargentos and Nancy Sanchez, with the Puerto Rico Health Department, sport their medals as well as their clean hands. These two hand hygiene “cats” washed off all their hand-soiled spots in a winning performance.
Contestants included several from the military whom we were excited to see, thank and serve.
Here Jamaican visitors experience the Best Practice hand hygiene, engineered into this traveling model of the HFL – 5000 integrated hand sink, donated by the Eagle Corporation.
Dr. Christine Moe from Emory University stopped by for a handwash following her Research Leadership Award presented by NSF. Her work has opened the door to better understand norovirus and formulate noro-effective, Food Code compliant alcohol hand sanitizers. More information is available is here.
Dr. Moe’s thorough handwash earned her an Honorary Champion status in Handwashing For Life’s Olympics, presented by Jim Mann, Executive Director of the Handwashing For Life Institute.
Not to be outdone, fellow researcher, LeeAnn Jaykus, North Carolina State, enjoys a handwash and reaps the reward of also being named an Honorary Champion, only the second ever presented by the Handwashing For Life Institute. Dr. Jaykus’ work, also on norovirus, can be seen in a poster available here.
More complete information regarding the winners of the 2007 NSF Leadership Awards is available on nsf.org.
