Real-Time Information and Motivation
The Handwashing For Life Scoreboard is a component of ECM, Electronic Compliance Monitoring. It is the scoreboard screen or marquee positioned in clear view of the staff work stations to assure as an indicator to the team of their current handwashing performance. Some technologies will report frequency and others both frequency and the length of the wash, an indicator of effectiveness/quality. Badged and direct entry identification systems have the option to display performance by team or individuals.
An ideal location for the Scoreboard is in the normal workflow of the nurses, reporting to all in real-time. The screen shows either the percentage of target or the running number of handwashes. Some systems offer tailored options.
In the spirit of professionalism and individual accountability, the team or person running below the standard level is the first to know of the non-compliance condition of their handwashing. Importantly, they are in the best position to take prompt corrective action. This direct-to-staff reporting method is the remedy for those operators concerned about storing data which they fear could be misinterpreted by auditors. This visual feedback facilitates a timely return to the agreed safe standard.
The Handwashing For Life Scoreboard’s primary benefit is continuous staff motivation, saving unit leader supervisory time while assuring patient safety.
